Zé do Caixão aka Coffin Joe as portrayed by José Mojica Marins in his 1964 film "À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma" (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul.)

Born on Friday, March 13th 1936 in São Paulo, Brazil, José Mojica Marins had a strong interest in filmmaking, and in fact completed his first super 8-mm film at the age of 12. "Á meia-noite levarei sua alma" (At Midnight I'll Take your Soul) marked his feature length debut, and is considered Brazil's first horror film. José has said that the idea came to him in a nightmare, where a dark figure dressed in black was pulling him into hell. He awoke and began writing what would become "À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma" (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul.) After the original actor backed out he ended up portraying Zé himself, and went on to play the character in over a half-dozen films.

Offscreen.com has a great in depth interview with José available here. And be sure to visit José Mojica Marins' official site (in Portuguese)

An interesting piece of trivia:
During filming the crew refused to shoot a scene because there wasn't enough sunlight. Director 'Jose Mojica Marins' forced them to shoot the scene by pointing a gun at the cameraman. Various crew members have confirmed the story. On one of the rare occasions when he would respond to questions about the incident, Marins claimed that the gun was only a prop.
