Dr. J. Van Helsing

As portrayed by Peter Cushing in Hammer Studios's 1960 classic "The Brides of Dracula" directed by Terence Fisher.

What can be said about the late great Peter Cushing, the man exuded an sort of calm coolness mixed with obsession that made him a perfect choice for Van Helsing.

His performance gives "The Brides of Dracula" a sense of urgency, despite the fact that his adversary has to be one of the least intimidating Vampires in cinematic history. David Peel's Baron Meinster has always been as frightening to me as a little boy with a bath towel cape and plastic fangs. And even though in the film Cushing is knocked to the ground not once, but twice by an old lady, he still manages to exuded a coolness... The man is Grand Moff Tarkin for pete's sake.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Dr. Van Helsing, the original Fearless Vampire Killer.

Ahhh, the man with the coolest cheek bones in cinematic history! Cushing is indeed a cool cat! This is a great likeness of him! So what is your technique? Photoshop? Wacom? Keep the greatness rolling!

Actually I use Corel Painter with a Wacom tablet. I use the grease pencil and do lots and lots of blending.

Its amazing how well Painter captures the act of drawing, everything is intuitive, just like you had a pencil in your hand. I have actually on more then one occasion unconsciously brushed the tablet with my hand after using an eraser. Its that real.

If you haven't tried Painter yet should. There is a free trial here:

"For Pete's sake." Bad, bad pun, but a very good likeness. "Brides of Dracula" is at the top of my list of favorite horror movies of all time. There are lots of really great moments in that movie, and Yvonne Monlaur was one of Hammer's best babes. When are you going to depict her?

Beautiful rendition of a top notch actor. Good job! On a side note, my buddy Louie Paul (horror movie expert and Wendy's husband) was briefly the owner of Peter Cushing's passport. Put that in your useless facts file.

Dooh! Swear to God I didn't intend that pun, wish I had, but sadly I'm not that clever...

I really need to start doing some more horror babes soon. I avoid them because I worry that I can't do them justice, and for fear that if I do figure out how to draw attractive women I might never make my way back to monsters!

Rob! Thanks for the cool idea on the Halloween art, I had never even thought about the possibility of turning that into a greeting card- that would be very cool! However, I am in the process of making some of my original art available for purchase, (and at a ridiculously low price) soon. I am pretty psyched about the idea, and I am hoping it will be appealing- especially to true blue monster fans like you! By the way, I have really been enjoying the links you have provided on your blog, it has been a total blast to see some of the great vintage horror realted stuff that people are posting on their blogs. I really enjoyed the Sir Graves Ghastly site- although I never got to see his show, it was interesting and tons of fun to read about him and the show. Talk to you soon...
